Our experience began during the construction of a major metropolitan. golf course, so construction was experienced first. Design was self-taught, with hours of study. Minimalist style is the highest degree of golf course emulation.  Management education was from the highest form of golf courses and including a PGA Tour venue. First design/construction was 290 acre, 18 hole private golf retreat. Design was in the principles of Pine Valley Golf Course.
Over the 50+ years I have seen many changes come along to golf and the way it is managed and played. Tom Doak wrote the book Golf in America, and to my agreement stated there are two classes of golf courses "contrived" or "minimalist". Most golfers do not understand that at all. Step back and think about Old Tom Morris @St. Andrews and how hard it was for him to get his D7 Cat dozer running? Or when he designed Prestwick. That was and STILL is GOLF. Anyone can "contrive" a golf course given enough technology, and $, but to a walk a parcel of land and "find" one, takes a completely different skill set, one which understands golf at a much higher level.
